<p>Cooking schools have expanded in recent years, both in popularity and in number.  Many people are interested in learning more about the culinary arts, and so the demand for culinary education has grown.  Not everyone is interested in pursuing a career in the field, though, which brings us to an important distinction: There are two basic types of culinary programs.  Since many cooking schools offer both types, it is important to understand the difference between them, so that you can better determine what program is right for you.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Many cooking schools and culinary programs are for career-minded individuals.  Most notable right now is the large number of cooking schools that have cropped up recently.  These schools&#8217; programs are focused on the people who are interested in the culinary arts not only for fun, but also with the idea of earning their living in the kitchen.  These are people who are interested in making what they love into a long-term, rewarding career.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Cooking schools generally market themselves based in part on their credentials: They have earned a reputation for turning out fine chefs, and they use that reputation to draw new students.  The reputation is important because it helps recent graduates get their first job, when they have little or no practical experience for employers to go on, just their degree.  Think of whom you would hire in this situation: a recent graduate from a culinary school you have never heard, or a recent graduate from a well-known and respected culinary institute.</p>

In addition to reputation, career cooking schools and programs typically offer degrees, instead of just certificates and individual classes.  Their degree programs will obviously be geared toward a career, rather than a hobby, often with training in health and food safety, nutrition, and business management.</p>

Cooking programs geared toward career chefs usually offer accredited degree programs, expert instruction, state-of-the-art equipment, student services such as job placement, and quality reputations in the culinary industry.  On the other hand, cooking classes or programs intended for hobbyists generally offer a more relaxed atmosphere, social interaction, a focus on fun recipes rather than practical recipes, and an emphasis on the experience rather than on qualifications you can put on your resume.  Whichever type of program you decide is right for you, at least one of the many cooking schools out there is sure to meet your needs.</p>

<p>Searching for a certified or accredited college or university for most disciplines is largely a matter of finding a school accredited by a recognized agency.  Culinary institutes are a bit different.  Because many culinary schools today are associated with or a part of a larger university system, they may be accredited by the licensing agency that approves the school as a whole as an institution issuing bachelor or associate degrees.  </p>
<p>However, this type of general accreditation doesn&#8217;t necessarily guarantee that the particular division of the culinary institute within that university meets the highest standards for fine chefs and restaurant managers in the United States and around the world.  The reason is obvious:  no agency focusing on standard educational disciplines fully understands what is essential to a fine culinary learning experience.  For that very reason, the American Culinary Federation developed its own accrediting system years ago.  This accreditation is given specifically to culinary institutes to designate that they have met or exceeded the additional standards of the ACF for providing a high quality learning experience.  </p>
<p>How Accreditation Works for Culinary Institutes</p>
<p>The American Culinary Institute Federation Foundation Accrediting Commission (ACFFAC) judges each culinary institute on several criteria, including:</p>
<p>Curriculum<br />Faculty and staff <br />Resources<br />Organizational structure</p>
<p>Every culinary school wishing to be accredited must go through a process that evaluates all of these things before being approved to carry the ACFFAC seal.  </p>
<p>To begin the process, a culinary institute must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an institute of higher education.  When this has been achieved, the next step is a self-evaluation following the guidelines provided by the ACF.  When this is submitted to the American Culinary Institute&#8217;s commission for accreditation, they will send a fact-finding team to carefully evaluate the institute to verify compliance to all of the requirements put forth.  Any input from the public and graduates is also welcome.  The school receives the ACFFAC seal of accreditation only when it has passed successfully through all of these phases.</p>
<p>It is important for culinary institutes to receive accreditation from the ACF.  The ACF is the largest not-for-profit organization for chefs and restaurateurs in the United States.  It was established as a way to set and maintain professional standards in the food preparation industry over seventy-five years ago.  Only an organization of this type can accurately evaluate the quality and value of a culinary institute.  Judging and evaluation by a group of peers is simply the only way to truly know that a culinary school is giving each student the best possible training, from pastries and desserts to kitchen management.</p>
<p>If you decide that a culinary institute is how you want to prepare for your future, be sure that you apply to ACFFAC accredited schools.  Whether the school is a stand-alone culinary institution or is part of a larger college or university is not as important as knowing that it is approved not only by the U.S. Department of Education as a post-secondary school, but by the American Culinary Federation Foundation Accrediting Commission as well.  If the school holds both of these certifications, you can be sure that you will be receiving an outstanding education at one of the best culinary institutes in the country.</p>

With the ever-rising number of food preparation shows on TV, cooking schools are quickly becoming one of the top choices for secondary education. It is a career that combines an out of the ordinary work environment with very little chance for tedium and monotony. Working as a chef requires the ability to think on one&#8217;s toes in a fast paced environment.</p>

<p>A dash of hard work and a pinch of talent are what make the perfect recipe for a successful culinary institute student. Individuals who go to a school to study culinary arts are looking for a career in a fast-paced environment. There are culinary arts schools all over the world that offer programs to prepare students for a profession that revolves around the kitchen. While studying the art of cooking, students will learn different techniques and skills that will be useful in their career. There are a variety of different programs available to students, as well as different specialties within culinary arts to choose from. Each specialty has unique techniques and skills necessary for the job.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
In a typical restaurant kitchen there is an order of authority according to the specific type of chef and their specialty. The highest-ranking chef is an executive chef. This chef is responsible for planning and preparing the food that is to be served in the restaurant. A few of the job duties include devising a menu, ensuring the food quality is up to standard and deciding how much food is needed. In training to become an executive chef, students will learn about food preparation and managing a staff.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
In addition, restaurants also have sous-chefs who are often times directly supervised by an executive chef. Sous-chefs assist executive chefs in many of the daily restaurant duties, such as planning the menu and requesting kitchen and food supplies. They are also responsible for teaching new techniques to the kitchen staff, as well as supervising other kitchen workers such as specialty chefs and cooks. While studying at a culinary institute, future sous-chefs learn different techniques for cooking, as well as teaching skills.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
There are also specialty chefs that work in a kitchen. These chefs can specialize in anything from appetizers and pastries to poultry and fish. These chefs prepare complete meals, as well as decorative food trays, and they also prepare the food for presentation to customers by providing garnishes. Specialty chefs also help to supervise cooks and other kitchen staff. While studying at a culinary arts school, specialty chefs learn about all different aspects of cooking and often times decide their specific specialty while in school.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Lastly, there are also cooks who are part of the professional kitchen staff. Typically cooks do the grunt-work in regards to the cooking in a kitchen. They prepare and cook complete meals and supervise others who are on staff and help in the kitchen. Often times, executive chefs and sous-chefs will begin their career as a cook. It is one of the first stepping-stones to a successful career once a student graduates from a culinary institute.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
While students are preparing for the real world and aspiring to become professional chefs, they will learn about all different aspects of cooking. First, students will learn the proper technique to cooking certain foods. They will also learn what ingredients compliment one another. One part of cooking that is often times overlooked but a very important part of the cooking process is food safety. Students will learn how to prepare food safely, as well as the proper cooking temperatures for different types of foods. Another important aspect to cooking is the nutritional benefits and health aspect of recipes and various foods. Students need to know what is in the food they are preparing and how it can affect people with certain health risks. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
As a student at a culinary institute, individuals will learn all about these important aspects of cooking, as well as fine tune the cooking skills they already possess.</p>

<p>You love to cook, you love food and you want to make a career in the culinary arts, but you don&#8217;t know how you can afford to go to a culinary institute. The usual route to financing any scholastic endeavor is through student loans and you may have already tapped that source. Another way to finance your education is through scholarships. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Landing a culinary institute scholarship isn&#8217;t as difficult as it sounds. It&#8217;s not overly easy either. You&#8217;ll have to do your part and put some effort into searching one out. Hundreds of opportunities are there for the taking.  The trick is to know where to look. These opportunities won&#8217;t come to you. No one is going to wake up one morning and hand out culinary institute scholarships to anyone who asks.  Securing a scholarship takes time and effort on your part and the results are more than worth it.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
You will need to know where to look, so the first thing to do is gather up your resources and build a file with a list of places. The phone book is always a good start for locating a cooking school near you. The Internet is even better. Do a search on schools, colleges and universities. Don&#8217;t rule out continuing education, night classes and online classes as keywords to use in your search.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
There are many other sources to include when searching for the best school.  The following is just a sampling of sources.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
High schools:  Whether you&#8217;re still in high school or not, guidance counselors have many resources at their fingertips and it&#8217;s worth talking to one of them. If they can&#8217;t help you directly, they can certainly point you in the right direction.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Universities:  Many culinary institutes offer scholarships to students already attending and there are some that also provide scholarships to those wishing to attend. Talk to the financial aid department. Scholarships are not something most schools put right out in plain view. Unless you ask for it, the school isn&#8217;t going to volunteer the information. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Your current employer:  If you&#8217;re already working in the cooking industry, some employers offer to pay for furthering your education. Talk to your Human Resources department and find out what programs are available.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Community groups:  Check out the local cooking clubs and other community groups in your area. While these groups may not be directly involved with a culinary institute, some members might have had scholarships themselves. Use someone else&#8217;s experience to your advantage and don&#8217;t be afraid to pick a few brains.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Culinary organizations:  Sometimes it pays to go right to the source. Many culinary institutes regard this as good public relations.  They want to promote their craft and are on the look out for fresh talent. You may have to go beyond the web page and actually call these places, send a letter, or email requesting information on scholarships.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Big business sponsorship:  Many big businesses in specific industries make large contributions to scholarship programs. If they don&#8217;t offer the funding to the students directly, they may make donations to the schools. Companies like Coca Cola and Pepsi have their own foundations set up, as do many others. Again, it takes some digging, but the results are well worth the effort.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Keep in mind that knowing where to look is as important as when to look. Starting a month or two before the next semester begins is already too late. This type of planning starts at least a year or two in advance. Take a look at where the awards went and to whom. Make a checklist with everything you need to do to fulfill all the requirements. Create a timetable for yourself so you don&#8217;t miss a thing. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
A scholarship may not provide you with complete funding for your entire education, but it will give you a head start. You might end up finding a few small scholarships that are only a couple of hundred dollars. Don&#8217;t turn your nose up at these either. It all helps, even if it just covers the cost of your books or tools. Keep looking and stay focused.</p>

<p>Most students judge the value of an education by the impact it will have on their future.  In other words, before committing to a degree program, real people first want to know what kind of jobs this degree will help them obtain.  Getting your education from a culinary institute opens the doors to a wide variety of jobs, several of which are listed below.</p>
<p>Fast food, short order, and other basic cook positions<br />
There are an amazing number of cook positions available in the food service industry.  These jobs range from, on the low end, cooks at fast food and low cost restaurants, to the high end, which includes the chefs at more prestigious establishments.  Although many of the low end chef positions are available to unskilled laborers, the higher the quality of the food prepared, and the higher the chef&#8217;s income, the greater the demand for educated cooks.  A degree from a culinary institute can help you meet that demand, and help you land a higher end job.</p>
<p>Head chef<br />
The position of head chef is a perfect place for someone with leadership skills, who enjoys having a little more responsibility in the workplace.  As head chef, you will have more control over menu selections, preparation styles and ingredients, and other aspects of the culinary arts.</p>
<p>Private chef<br />
Many people find working as a private chef to an individual family or a small institution is preferable in several different ways.  First, the atmosphere a private chef encounters is typically very different than an employee in a bustling commercial kitchen.  Also, private chefs tend to have an easier time selecting food choices, as they have the needs and preferences of only a few people to consider.</p>
<p>Menu planners and test kitchen chefs<br />
Menus don&#8217;t make themselves up.  A lot of preparation goes into planning even the simplest of menus, and many culinary businesses hire specialists to handle the job.  Menu planners do exactly what you might think, which is to plan out a menu.  Test kitchen chefs come up with the recipes for dishes the restaurant will offer.</p>
<p>Food marketing<br />
Advertising requires yet another food specialist, in this case, a person known as a food stylist.  A food stylist is responsible for preparing photogenic food, meals and desserts that will photograph well and entice customers to buy them.  Other positions in food advertising may require the food marketer to design visual advertising layouts, prepare slogans and jingles, and handle other steps of the marketing process.</p>
<p>Management of the culinary arts<br />
If you consider yourself to be extremely ambitious, this might be just the job for you.  Look for a culinary institute that offers a bachelor&#8217;s program in management of a culinary business; such a program will combine the typical associate&#8217;s degree in the culinary arts with a curriculum that teaches upper level management skills.</p>
<p>Food writer<br />
Not all jobs in the culinary arts have to do with the preparation of the food.  Some culinary careers deal with other aspects of the field.  A good example is a food writer.  Food writers come in many varieties: some review restaurants or write about different cuisines, while others write recipe or how to books.  Regardless of what facet of food a writer specializes in, an education from a culinary institute helps by verifying that the writer really knows what he or she is talking about.</p>
<p>These are only a few of the most common positions available to graduates of a culinary institute.  A culinary degree allows career goers plenty of flexibility when entering the work force or changing careers, making a cooking school an ideal place to start from when seeking a new or improved career.</p>

When you enroll at a culinary institute, you will be faced with a number of intriguing and challenging courses. Expect to learn both the basics and the little things that will make you an expert.
